Dorothy Parker - shoot me now!

American author Dorothy Parker once wrote, "If you have any young friends who aspire to become writers, the second-greatest favor you can do them is to present them with copies of The Elements of Style. The first-greatest, of course, is to shoot them now, while they're happy."

Yes - shoot me now! Writing is the ever-receding horizon. Just about the time I think I know what I'm doing it becomes apparent that I don't. So rather than write anything today I went searching for more quips and quotes by Parker and found a small book on my shelf called called "ENOUGH ROPE: a book of light verse" by Dorothy Parker that contains 99 pages of witty, wicked turns. Here's three of them:

Comment

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemproanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Romania

Experience

Some men break your heart in two,
Some men fawn and flatter,
Some men never look at you;
And that cleans up the matter.

Unfortunate Coincidence

By the time you swear you're his,
Shivering and sighing,
And he vows his passion is
Infinite, undying -
Lady, make a note of this:
One of you is lying.

    Staci!- My goodness! You have a blog. If ever there was someone who could use a blog, it's you!
    I choose to comment on this because I played Dorothy Parker in a skit in my history class in December. It was a lovely little "interview" with her, primarily to show that I had done research on her. But, I have always loved Dorothy Parker! She was such a "before-her-time" sort of gal. One of my favorites of hers is this little quip:
    I like to have a Martini
    Two at the very most
    Three, I'm under the table
    Four, I'm under my host.
    Which I have printed on a Martini glass.
    You haven't really lived until you've said all these things in front of a class of "got-get-that-A" honors kids while wearing a very stylish pink hat and pearls and pretending to smoke a pencil.
    Anyhoo, there's my little Dorothy Parker anecdote. If you ever wish to know random facts about her life, just ask. I hope this finds you very well and comfortable in life. I hope to hear from you soon!

    (I sign this just in case this signature thing doesn't work. I'm contemplating putting my name in the beginning so you know who this is from, but I figure it may do it for me. Much love!)

    Ah yes - that martini quip is one of my favorites too! I can't wait to see you as the Divine Miss P - soon, I hope!
